Warning! BPOM Bans Citizens from Using Breast Serums and Vaginal Medications
Jakarta — The Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) has revoked the marketing permits of eight cosmetic products marketed with excessive claims and deemed to violate propriety standards. The products were also found to be misleading consumers by promising benefits that cannot be scientifically proven.
This enforcement action resulted from intensive BPOM oversight throughout the second half of 2025, particularly targeting cosmetic promotions on marketplaces and social media. In its findings, several products were discovered to be marketed with sensational claims such as “breast tightening”, “breast enlargement”, “preventing vaginal discharge”, and “tightening intimate organs”.
BPOM determined that such claims were not only misleading, but also violated the provisions of BPOM Regulation Number 18 of 2024 concerning the Labelling, Promotion, and Advertising of Cosmetics. This regulation stipulates that cosmetics are intended for external use only, such as cleansing, fragrancing, altering appearance, and body care, not for influencing organ function or therapeutic purposes.
BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar stated that this step to revoke marketing permits represents the state’s protection of the public from irresponsible business practices.
“BPOM will not tolerate business actors who exploit sensitive issues and consumer vulnerabilities through misleading cosmetic promotions that violate propriety standards,” Taruna said in a statement released on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.
He stressed that such practices not only violate the law, but also potentially harm health and damage public interests. He stated that promotions that do not comply with regulations reflect low accountability from business actors regarding consumer safety.
As a follow-up, BPOM has ordered business actors to withdraw all products from circulation and destroy them. Additionally, all forms of product promotion, whether in conventional or digital media, must be halted.
BPOM also emphasised that it will continue to strengthen oversight, particularly in the digital sphere, given the prevalence of cosmetic marketing with exaggerated claims. Every violation, it said, will be dealt with strictly in accordance with applicable regulations.
On the other hand, the public is urged to be more vigilant and not easily tempted by sensational claims. BPOM reminds the importance of conducting “Check CLICK” before purchasing products, which means checking the packaging, label, marketing permit, and expiry date.
“Do not easily believe unrealistic claims. Consumers must be more selective, especially for products marketed online,” Taruna said.
