War on Online Gambling: 33,836 Bank Accounts Blocked in Indonesia
Jakarta - The government, through various agencies, is striving to continue combating online gambling activities in Indonesia. The measures taken include blocking bank accounts and e-wallets, as well as shutting down websites and digital content related to online gambling. Most recently, the Financial Services Authority (OJK) stated it had blocked 33,836 accounts linked to online gambling up to May 2026. This was revealed by the Chief Executive of Banking Supervision at OJK, Dian Ediana Rae. βThe eradication of online gambling through coordination with the Ministry of Communication and Digital has led the OJK to request banks to block 33,836 accounts,β Dian said during an OJK Board of Commissioners Meeting on Friday (5/6/2026). For context, up to April 2026, the OJK had reportedly blocked 33,252 accounts related to online gambling. This means there was an addition of 580 accounts blocked in connection with online gambling. The decision to block accounts is made through an Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) process, a further in-depth review by banks to strictly trace suspicious transactions. Previously, Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid stated that the government had also terminated access to 3.45 million pieces of content related to online gambling from 20 October 2024 to 16 May 2026. Throughout 2025, the Ministry also submitted requests to the OJK for the blocking of 25,214 bank accounts suspected of being linked to online gambling activities. When requesting blocks from banks, the OJK receives account data detected as related to online gambling from the Ministry. Subsequently, the OJK instructs banks to investigate further before carrying out the blocking. Meutya stated that measures to eradicate online gambling must be implemented from upstream to downstream. Beyond just blocking sites and digital content, Meutya also stressed the importance of cutting off the flow of funds and payment systems used by online gambling operators.
