W. Jakarta on the discipline drive

JAKARTA (JP): Prostitutes, hawkers, truck drivers and home owners have all fallen victim to the government's National Discipline Campaign which has been underway since May.

The West Jakarta Mayoralty yesterday announced that it has discovered more than 900 cases of discipline violations during one month of operation, according to Karsidin, the head of the Agency for Public Order.

The violators include 373 street vendors trading illegally, 165 occupants of shanties built on prohibited sites, owners of 12 houses without building permits, five prostitutes, four vagrants, 10 trucks drivers breaking road rules and 229 people littering. There were also 110 cases of banners being raised in improper places.

The street vendors were expelled, the shanties and houses were demolished, the truck drivers were ticketed, the banners were removed and in the case of people who littered, they were fined.

Karsidin said the campaign indicated that the public's obedience to city regulations is still low. (29)
