Volunteers and Aceh authorities
Volunteers and Aceh authorities
From Koran Tempo
Unexpectedly, there are quite a large number of people with a
great sense of humanity in Indonesia. These Indonesian volunteers
have been working hard day and night in Aceh, helping the
Acehnese cope with problems arising after the earthquake and
tsunami. These volunteers have undertaken many things, from
setting up emergency schools in tents to providing psychological
help to the victims.
In short, most of the relief activities in Aceh are the result
of the initiative of Indonesian volunteers themselves. In this
context, the government, which actually should be the leader in
these efforts, is still busy deciding whether the Acehnese
authority, which will be set up at a later date, or the old
provincial administration will be responsible for the rebuilding
of Aceh. The problem remains whether the leadership should come
from the central government or should be autonomously in the
hands of the old provincial administration.
So, Indonesia is just like a newly independent state that is
trying to put everything in order. Unfortunately, when the
personnel change, the policies will also change.
