Viral Video of Neglected UI Central Library: Mossy Floors to Damaged Walls
DEPOK, KOMPAS.com - The central library building at Universitas Indonesia (UI) has come under scrutiny after a video depicting its neglected condition went viral on social media.
In the video uploaded by the Instagram account @jabodetabek24info, several facilities in the UI library are shown to be damaged.
The video shows the library building’s floors covered in moss with puddles of water in several room areas.
Additionally, some wall panels appear damaged and exposed, revealing rusted iron frames inside.
Not only that, ceilings at several points are seen to have collapsed with hanging materials.
Overall, the room conditions appear damp, dull, and minimally maintained.
The video’s narration states that the damage is suspected to occur on more than one floor of the library building.
“The UI Central Library Building is currently in the public spotlight after a viral video upload shows the poorly maintained facility conditions,” the video caption reads.
“It is true that the area recorded in the video is within the UI Library Building environment. We are aware of the conditions complained about by netizens, such as mossy areas or damage to wall surfaces,” said Erwin when confirmed on Thursday (7/5/2026).
According to Erwin, the damage occurred due to water seepage and leaks from several parts of the building, particularly in outdoor areas and the roof.
He stated that UI had actually begun repairs before the video went viral.
“UI has initiated the comprehensive project phase named Design & Build Rehabilitation of the UI Library Building since late January 2026,” he said.
Erwin explained that the repair project is estimated to last 270 days as it is carried out thoroughly.
Repairs are focused on addressing the sources of leaks, starting from fixing anti-leak layers on the tower roof, roof garden, curtain wall, to skylight.
“We greatly appreciate input from the academic community and the public. We also request understanding and patience during this comprehensive physical repair process, for the realisation of a safe and comfortable learning facility in line with UI standards,” said Erwin.
