A video showing the wedding process of two children who are still in junior high school (SMP) in Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), went viral on social media. The marriage of the couple, described as ‘child brides’, attracted the attention of netizens. The video was first uploaded on Facebook account @Burhan on Friday (6 March 2026). By Saturday (7 March 2026), the post had about 189,000 views, more than 2,000 likes, and 578 comments.

In the post, the account offered congratulations to the couple. It also noted that the ijab qabul ceremony proceeded even though the location was drenched by heavy rain.

“The process of the ijab kabul for such child brides… but alhamdulillah it is valid, even though it rained heavily like this!!!,” the @Burhan post quoted by detikBali on Saturday (7 March 2026).

According to detikBali’s checks, the incident is believed to have occurred in Dusun Mawun, Desa Tumpak, Kecamatan Pujut, Central Lombok.

The two children are said to have performed a traditional escorting rite or selarian, in which the groom takes the bride away about a week earlier, after which they were married on Friday.

Public Protection, Women and Children Office Responds

Head of the Lombok Tengah PPA UPTD (Unit Pelayanan Teknis Daerah) for Protection of Women and Children, Baiq Indria Purnawati, admitted she had not received official information about the incident. She said she was concerned if the reports are true.

“There is no information yet regarding this marriage,” Indria told DetikBali via WhatsApp.

Indria said her office would conduct on-site checks to confirm the information and would coordinate with the local village government.

“We will immediately contact the village children’s forum in that area,” she said.

According to Indria, her office cannot take further steps before conducting on-site checks. If the incident is true, they will provide counselling to the two brides and grooms.

“After that, we can determine the next handling steps,” she insisted.

Indria reiterated her concern over the incident. She said prevention efforts against child marriages have been conducted vigorously for some time.

“We are very disappointed. Campaigns to prevent child marriage in 2025 were quite intensive by our department,” she concluded. (dpw/dpw)
