Viral Incident: Woman in Lebak Swears Oath While Stepping on the Qur'an, Two Individuals Detained by Police
A video has gone viral on social media depicting a woman in Lebak Regency, Banten, swearing an oath while stepping on the Qur’an. Banten Regional Police have detained two women featured in the video.
In the circulating video, a woman wearing a striped T-shirt asks a woman in a daster to swear an oath while stepping on the Qur’an. The woman in the daster complies and swears while stepping on the Qur’an that she did not take the powder and perfume.
Head of Public Relations for Banten Police, Senior Commissioner Maruli Hutapea, stated that the viral video occurred in the Malingping area, Lebak Regency. He mentioned that a woman with initials NL suspected a woman with initials MT of taking her items.
“Since no confession was obtained, NL then asked MT to take an oath using the Qur’an. During this process, it is suspected that the act of stepping on the Qur’an occurred, which was then recorded and widely spread on social media on Wednesday (8/4),” said Maruli to reporters on Friday (10/4/2026).
According to Maruli, after the video went viral, Malingping Police Station moved to the location and detained the two individuals in the video.
“We have secured the parties allegedly involved and are currently conducting intensive examinations. The handling of this case will be carried out professionally, transparently, and in accordance with applicable legal provisions,” Maruli stated.
Maruli urged the public to maintain a conducive atmosphere and not to be easily provoked by information circulating on social media.
“We urge the public to remain calm, not to be provoked, and not to further disseminate videos that could incite unrest. Entrust the handling of this case to the police,” he added.
He said that personnel from Malingping Police Station are still at the scene to provide security and monitor the situation. Police are also guarding the front of NL’s salon to prevent it from being damaged by the crowd.
“Up to now, the condition around the location, including the salon building, is safe and there have been no acts of vandalism or arson,” he said.
