Video: Technology and Human Resources Are Not the Issue—These Are the Real Challenges for Solar Power Development in Indonesia
Business leaders in the New and Renewable Energy (EBT) sector have welcomed President Prabowo Subianto’s establishment of the Energy Transition Acceleration Task Force to accelerate EBT development towards Indonesia’s Energy Sovereignty target within three to five years, led by Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia.
Emmanuel Jefferson Kuesar, CEO of SUN Energy, stated that the task force’s mandate, which includes building 100 GW of solar power (PLTS), represents a “game changer” for the sector as it can overcome obstacles related to overlapping regulations whilst demonstrating a commitment to accelerating EBT implementation.
According to SUN Energy, the solar energy sector currently faces at least four development challenges. First, the execution of EBT development targets—such as the 1 gigawatt EBT target by 2026—still lacks clarity regarding tender procedures and development plans.
Second, the industry requires incentives for developers to accelerate development and enhance competitiveness, particularly given that technology and human resources are already prepared. Third, solar power developers require certainty regarding electricity selling prices to ensure competitive viability. Fourth, developers need financing support, PLN infrastructure readiness, and legal certainty for long-term renewable energy investments.
