Video: Tackling Challenges to Elevate Shrimp as a Leading Fisheries Export Product
CNBC Indonesia hosted the Food Summit 2026 “Indonesia Food Safety Urgency: Towards a New Policy Framework”, aimed at fostering shared understanding, strengthening synergies among stakeholders, and formulating strategic recommendations to bolster the national food security and quality system.
At the Food Summit 2026, the Director of Brackish Water Fish at the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), Fernando Jongguran Simanjuntak, outlined government efforts to boost fisheries production through Good Aquaculture Practices (CBIB), primarily by small-scale farmers. This initiative is being pursued via strengthened cooperation and socialisation among institutions and cultivators, despite challenges related to education and obstacles.
From the salt sector perspective, the Director of Operations and Development at PT Garam (Persero), Syaifuddin, expressed optimism about achieving salt self-sufficiency by 2027 through intensification strategies, extensification programmes involving additional salt pond land, and the utilisation of technology in salt production.
Regarding Indonesian shrimp, the Secretary of the Shrimp Club Indonesia (SCI), Rully Setya Purnama, noted that shrimp remains a key export commodity for Indonesia’s fisheries products, comprising 30% of total exports, with the United States as the main market. Therefore, food safety is a crucial issue for Indonesian shrimp exports through global standard certifications, even for small-scale farmer production.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Centre for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies at IPB University, Yonvitner, revealed Indonesia’s challenges in developing aquaculture fisheries up to the salt sector, where issues of spatial planning, policies, fishermen’s capacity, and land remain a focus for the government.
Additionally, issues of climate change, microplastics, and logistics support pose major problems that must be addressed to advance Indonesia’s fisheries sector.
