President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship programme, Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG), is said to be able to stimulate community economic activity through an increase in demand for main food commodities, particularly horticultural vegetables.

The Director of Vegetables and Medicinal Plants at the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, Muhammad Agung Sunusi, stated that the MBG programme can boost demand at the farmer level, thereby increasing farmers’ incomes and community welfare. Vegetables such as pakcoy, spinach, carrots, potatoes, up to chillies and onions, are experiencing significant and widespread increases throughout Indonesia.

This surge in vegetable demand is encouraging the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure the security of vegetable supplies, mainly in production centres, through the development of vegetable production clusters focused on the types of vegetables needed for MBG. This is being done through farmer management and planting patterns so that supplies are always sufficient.

What is the impact of MBG on vegetable commodities? For more details, watch the dialogue between Andi Shalini and the Director of Vegetables and Medicinal Plants at the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, Muhammad Agung Sunusi, on Squawk Box, CNBC Indonesia (Monday, 13/04/2026).
