Video: KKP's Strategies to Help Small-Scale Fish Farmers Boost Aquaculture Production
CNBC Indonesia hosted the Food Summit 2026 titled “Indonesia Food Safety Urgency: Towards a New Policy Framework”, aimed at fostering shared understanding, strengthening synergies among stakeholders, and formulating strategic recommendations to bolster the national food security and quality system.
At the Food Summit 2026, Fernando Jongguran Simanjuntak, Director of Brackish Water Fish at KKP, outlined government efforts to boost fisheries production through Good Aquaculture Practices (CBIB), primarily by small-scale fish farmers. This initiative is pursued via strengthened cooperation and outreach among institutions and cultivators, despite challenges related to education and obstacles.
From the salt sector perspective, Syaifuddin, Director of Operations and Development at PT Garam (Persero), expressed optimism about achieving salt self-sufficiency by 2027 through intensification strategies, extensification programmes by adding salt pond land, and the utilisation of technology in salt production.
Regarding Indonesian shrimp, Rully Setya Purnama, Secretary of the Indonesia Shrimp Club (SCI), noted that shrimp continues to be a key export commodity for Indonesia’s fisheries products, accounting for 30% of total exports, with the United States as the main market. Therefore, food safety is a critical issue in shrimp exports through global standard certifications, even for small-scale farmer production.
Meanwhile, Yonvitner, Head of the Centre for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies at IPB University, revealed the challenges Indonesia faces in developing aquaculture and the salt sector. Issues such as spatial planning, policies, fisher capacity, and land availability remain key concerns for the government.
Additionally, climate change, microplastics, and logistics support pose major problems that must be addressed to advance Indonesia’s fisheries sector.
