Jakarta – CNBC Indonesia reports that oversupply from China is flooding the global steel market, including Indonesia, posing a challenge to the domestic steel industry. Handaja Susanto, President Director of PT Saranacentral Bajatama Tbk (BAJA), said the US–China trade war has constrained Chinese steel from flowing into the United States; as a result Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, has become a dump market. It is noted that around 55% of steel circulating in Indonesia originates from China. Subsidies provided by the Chinese government keep Chinese steel products cheap, making it difficult for products from other countries, including Indonesia, to compete in domestic and export markets. The local industry hopes the government will seriously address the influx of Chinese steel, including the application of the Indonesian National Standard (SNI), as many Chinese steels do not meet SNI standards. In addition, entrepreneurs hope for the implementation of anti-dumping and safeguard measures to protect local products. What pressures is the Indonesian steel industry facing? Watch the dialogue with Handaja Susanto in Manufacture Check on CNBC Indonesia, Friday (27 February 2026).
