Victims of Tegal Landslide Begin Occupying Temporary Housing
The Ministry of Public Works (PU) has recorded that 103 affected families from the land movement disaster in Padasari Village, Tegal Regency, Central Java, have begun occupying temporary housing. “The operational handover of 103 housing units from the Head of the Central Java Residential Infrastructure Implementation Work Unit (Kasatker PPS) to the Regent of Tegal has been carried out,” according to a written statement from the Ministry of PU, Thursday, 19 March 2026. The handover, conducted on Tuesday, 17 March 2026, also signifies that the subsequent management of the temporary housing is now the responsibility of the local government. This is because the construction of the temporary housing is a project of the Ministry of Public Works. The temporary housing was built by the Ministry of Public Works through the Central Java Residential Infrastructure Implementation Work Unit, the Directorate General of Strategic Infrastructure, and with support from the construction service provider PT Wijaya Karya (Persero) Tbk. The land movement disaster struck Padasari Village, Jatinegara Subdistrict, Tegal Regency, Central Java, on 6 February 2026. Based on data from the Tegal Regency PMI, the number of houses that have experienced damage has now increased to 448 units, while 1,686 residents have been forced to evacuate to safer locations to avoid further risks of building collapse. As of 16 March 2026, the Ministry of Public Works recorded that the progress of temporary housing construction has reached 82.67 percent. Of the total 204 units or 17 building blocks, which also include a mosque, have been constructed and are starting to be utilised by the community in stages. Overall, the construction of temporary housing at the site is planned for 456 housing units. The housing will be equipped with supporting facilities such as places of worship, as well as kitchens and toilets in each block. Each housing unit is also equipped with basic facilities such as beds, mattresses, pillows, bolsters, wardrobes, and fans to support the comfort of the occupants. The Ministry of Public Works hopes that the cooperation between the central government, local government, and technical agencies in providing housing can become a quick solution as well as an initial step towards planning a safer and more sustainable area for the affected residents.
