Vice President Requests Nabire Port to Become Main Hub for Economic Growth
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President (Wapres) Gibran Rakabuming Raka has requested that Nabire Port in Central Papua Province become the main hub for economic growth in the area.
“Because of this, the regional government in Central Papua must prepare directed and sustainable development planning, utilising the presence of Nabire Port as the main economic growth hub,” said the Vice President in an official statement in Jakarta on Monday, regarding the inspection of the Nabire Port Commercial Dock in Nabire Regency, Central Papua.
The Vice President stated that this planning is expected to integrate the development of the logistics, trade, and inter-regional connectivity sectors, so that the benefits of port development can be optimally felt by the wider community and drive overall regional progress.
Regarding the visit, Vice President Gibran explained that it is part of implementing President Prabowo Subianto’s directives, which emphasise strengthening connectivity and transport infrastructure, including ports, as the backbone of goods distribution and equitable development in eastern Indonesia.
The current conditions cause limited berthing space, so when a passenger ship docks, cargo ships must wait outside because simultaneous berthing is not possible.
Ewanggen also highlighted the limitations of the trestle facilities connecting to the dock, which impact loading and unloading activities.
“And the second one, Mr Vice President, we request the addition of a trestle. Because we currently have three trestles. The first one is used for passenger embarkation-debarkation, but the second one in front is for unloading goods from the passenger ship. So if we work on cargo ships, we use this one. If that’s used for entry and exit, it’s not possible,” he explained.
“Because the containers we’re unloading are already 40 feet, Mr Vice President. So the 40-foot length doesn’t allow for passing each other. Roughly like that, Mr Vice President,” he added.
As a solution, they propose extending the dock and adding supporting facilities.
Furthermore, Ewanggen emphasised the strategic role of Nabire Port in serving the logistics needs of the surrounding region.
Also present at the inspection were Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Ribka Haluk, Head of the Central Papua Special Autonomy Development Acceleration Steering Agency (BP3OKP) Petrus Waine, Nabire Regent Mesak Magai, and Acting Secretary to the Vice President Al Muktabar.
