Caracas (ANTARA) - Acting President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez, and President of Colombia Gustavo Petro, on Friday discussed cooperation in various fields such as energy, security, tourism, and trade. Speaking after their first meeting, Rodriguez said both parties held “serious and concrete” discussions regarding efforts to combat criminal groups and transnational crime, including plans to strengthen intelligence exchange. She said the two countries also explored closer energy cooperation, particularly interconnection projects for electricity and gas, as well as efforts to boost tourism and expand bilateral trade. The agenda also included border issues, migration, and broader economic cooperation. Rodriguez stated that bilateral trade reached around $1.2 billion USD ($1 USD = Rp17,308) in 2025 and both parties aim to continue developing economic relations. Petro, who arrived in the Venezuelan capital on Friday, highlighted the importance of regional integration. He said stronger cooperation could benefit both countries while respecting their autonomy. Petro’s visit marks the first official visit by a head of state to Venezuela since Rodriguez assumed the role of acting president. On 3 January, the United States military launched a large-scale operation against Venezuela and abducted President Nicolas Maduro along with his wife before taking them to New York. Rodriguez then took on the role of acting president. During the visit, the two countries also signed the final act of the third meeting of the Colombia-Venezuela Neighbouring and Integration Commission, which aims to advance cooperation initiatives.
