Vehicle Sales Surge Unexpectedly, Gaikindo Chief Reveals Surprising Reasons
Jakarta—Indonesia’s national vehicle sales have demonstrated significant growth over recent months, including a rise of more than 20% last month. This increase has been driven by various factors ranging from government incentive programmes to automotive producer marketing strategies.
Gaikindo Chairman Putu Juli Ardika explained that many had previously predicted vehicle sales would weaken. However, demand has in fact increased. The reasons for this growth include the automotive industry actively organising various vehicle exhibitions that provide opportunities for the public to test-drive different latest vehicle models directly.
“Indeed, many were previously pessimistic that vehicle sales would only reach around 780,000 units. However, we have conducted numerous exhibitions and education programmes so that the public can experience vehicles firsthand,” Putu said at the Ministry of Industry in Jakarta on Friday (13 March 2026).
Beyond promotional activities through exhibitions, government stimulus continues to apply, helping to maintain public purchasing interest. The incentive programme provides additional encouragement for consumers wanting to purchase new vehicles.
“The government’s incentive stimulus remains in effect until the end of the year, which is being utilised by consumers and vehicle producers,” said Putu.
Automotive producers are also offering various price cuts and attractive purchase programmes to increase sales. These strategies are typically implemented ahead of year-end to drive vehicle sales.
“Vehicle producers are also offering discounts and various purchase incentives because it is approaching the end of the year,” he explained.
The increase in vehicle sales has also been influenced by improving road infrastructure conditions across various regions. With expanding and increasingly comfortable toll roads, the public is increasingly interested in using private vehicles.
“Road conditions are now increasingly good, so many people want to try new vehicles, especially ahead of mudik,” he said.
The annual mudik tradition is one factor influencing consumer decisions to purchase new vehicles. For many people, owning a private vehicle provides greater comfort during journeys returning home to their hometowns with family.
“Yes, one of the supporting factors for vehicle sales is indeed the mudik factor. People see that roads are now good, travel is more comfortable, so some choose to purchase new vehicles,” said Putu.
