A queue of homebound vehicles travelling to Gilimanuk Port in Jembrana Regency, Bali, reached 30 kilometres on Sunday 15 March, ahead of Nyepi Day celebrations.

The queue of homebound travellers was dominated by cars, buses and trucks of various sizes. The queue extended as far as Negara City Terminal in Kaliakah Village, whilst motorcyclists were seen travelling along both sides of the roads leading to the port.

Jembrana Police Chief Deputy Commissioner Kadek Citra Dewi Suparwati stated that the peak exodus from Bali in connection with Nyepi was indeed predicted to occur on that day.

“The peak exodus from Bali is expected today. The reference point for homebound travellers from Bali is not Eid al-Fitr, but Nyepi,” she said, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Kadek Citra stated that her office had coordinated across sectors to address the 30-kilometre queue. At Gilimanuk Port, measures were implemented to regulate port entrance gates to create space for four-wheeled vehicles, buses and trucks.

“The port entrances had been occupied solely by motorcycles. We are now distributing access so that other vehicle types get space,” she said.

Jembrana Police also coordinated with police departments along the exodus routes into Jembrana to conduct checks on large cargo vehicles.

To prevent congestion from worsening, she urged homebound travellers to remain orderly in queues to facilitate officers in clearing traffic.

“Vehicles from Denpasar should not obstruct the entire roadway as there are still vehicles coming from Gilimanuk,” she said.
