REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, ARABIAN GULF — A US military aerial refuelling aircraft was reported to be in an emergency situation while flying over the Arabian Gulf on Tuesday (5/5/2026). This news emerged based on public flight tracking data and an aviation emergency code captured by radar.

The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft, often nicknamed a “flying petrol station”, was reported to be in a technical emergency condition while in the strategic area near the Strait of Hormuz.

Cited from Gulf News, which quoted a Flightradar24 report, the aircraft reportedly transmitted the squawk 7700 signal, the international code for a general emergency, before disappearing from the radar monitoring system. The incident occurred over the Strait of Hormuz. Data showed the aircraft making a drastic altitude descent and changing direction towards Qatar.

The US Air Force’s KC-135R aircraft was carrying out an aerial refuelling mission when the emergency transponder code was activated. About one hour after the emergency code was detected, the aircraft’s transponder signal was completely lost. The last position indicated the aircraft heading towards Qatar, which is the main operational base for US military aircraft in the region.

Flight tracking data showed the aircraft flying in a circular pattern in the air for a while before initiating an altitude descent procedure for landing. As of now, the exact cause of the emergency condition is unknown. There has been no official confirmation linking this incident to an attack by an adversary.

Following the loss of the signal, several light utility H125 helicopters were observed in the area around the incident location.

As of this report, it cannot be confirmed whether the aircraft crashed or successfully made an emergency landing in Qatar. The loss of the transponder signal does not always mean an accident. In military protocols, transponders are sometimes deliberately deactivated for operational or security reasons, especially when crossing sensitive airspace.

However, the combination of activating the 7700 emergency code followed by the sudden loss of signal strengthens suspicions of a serious incident experienced by the aircraft crew.
