US Migration Policies Trigger Surge in Applications for Irish Citizenship
Moscow (ANTARA) - Applications for Irish citizenship by US citizens of Irish descent have risen sharply in the past year, driven by strict US government policies, including in the field of migration.
A Financial Times report states that the number of applicants increased by 63%, from 11,601 people in 2024 to 18,910 in 2025, the highest since digital recording began in 2013.
Increasingly strict US migration policies are pushing many citizens to seek “backup plans” to face future uncertainties.
Most applications have reportedly been approved, and lawyers estimate that this trend will continue to rise.
Irish citizenship is considered attractive due to its geographical proximity to Europe, the large US diaspora, close relations with the UK, as well as a developing business climate and serving as a base for many American companies.
Additionally, applications from British citizens increased by 11% annually, exceeding 26,000 in 2025.
This trend reflects growing interest in obtaining alternative access to the European Union post-Brexit.
