Washington (ANTARA) - The United States (US) has lifted sanctions against Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodriguez, according to the latest information published on the US Department of the Treasury’s website on Wednesday (1/4).

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) under the US Department of the Treasury stated that Rodriguez has been removed from their sanctions list, without providing further details on the decision.

In a post on the social media platform X, Rodriguez welcomed the step as a positive development towards normalisation and strengthening of bilateral relations.

She hopes that additional sanctions against Venezuela will be lifted to support economic development and cooperation.

Rodriguez previously served as vice president under President Nicolas Maduro and was sanctioned by the US in 2018 as part of measures targeting members of the Maduro government.

On 3 January, US military forces launched a large-scale operation against Venezuela and forcibly captured Maduro along with his wife before taking them to New York.

Rodriguez then assumed the role of acting president, and since then Washington has established relations with her government.

Relations between the US and Venezuela have long been tense. In recent months, the US has eased several restrictions, particularly in the energy sector.

Venezuela holds some of the world’s largest proven oil reserves and remains an important player in the global energy landscape.

On Monday (30/3), the US Embassy in Caracas resumed operations after being closed for seven years.
