US-Iran Peace Deal Update: Is a Deal Imminent?

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The US and Iran are reportedly nearing a peace deal to end the three-month conflict, with US President Donald Trump stating the proposal is ‘mostly negotiated’.

The deal has drawn global attention due to plans to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most vital energy shipping route disrupted by the Iran-US-Israel conflict escalation since February.

‘Final aspects and details of the agreement are currently being discussed and will be announced shortly,’ Trump wrote on social media on Saturday local time, cited on Monday (25 May 2026).

The peace proposal, mediated by Pakistan, is the main framework to halt fighting, lift US blockades on Iranian shipments, and reopen Strait of Hormuz access. US and Iranian media report the memorandum also includes discussions on Iran’s high-enriched uranium stockpiles.

Reports indicate uranium negotiations will take place over the next 30-60 days. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio hinted at a major announcement soon.

Iran’s response

Meanwhile, a senior Iranian source told Reuters the peace deal requires approval from Iran’s Supreme National Security Council before being presented to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei for final endorsement. However, signs of compromise are emerging.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said this week’s talks show reduced tensions. ‘This week’s trend points to reduced disputes, but issues remain to be resolved through mediation,’ Baghaei said, cited by Reuters on Monday.

Iran has stressed the cessation of US blockades on Iranian shipments as a key point, while Tehran also demands assurances against future US attacks.

Conversely, Iranian news agency Tasnim reported differences remain on one or two clauses. Iran warned there would be no final agreement if Washington introduces new obstacles.

Nuclear Issue in Peace Proposal

US media Axios reported the draft includes Iran’s commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons. In return, the US is said to ease some oil sanctions and restore port access for Iran.

Trump repeatedly stated the primary aim of US strikes against Iran was to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. However, Iran continues to deny the allegations, insisting its nuclear programme is peaceful.

Despite rising hopes for peace, the war’s impact on the global economy is unlikely to dissipate soon. According to Refinitiv data at 9:40 AM WIB, July Brent crude (LCOc1) stood at $98.97 per barrel, down from last Friday’s close of $103.54. West Texas Intermediate (WTI/CLc1) was at $96.6 per barrel.
