US explores multinational operation to secure Strait of Hormuz
Washington — President Donald Trump has stated that a joint US-led multinational operation to secure the Strait of Hormuz could commence shortly, though preparations are still required.
“Soon, but we need a little time to get there,” Trump told reporters when asked about the timeline for the operation to secure the strait.
The US leader has called on countries to assist in securing the strait, adding that Washington is negotiating with seven nations to participate in the initiative.
On 28 February, the United States and Israel launched strikes against targets in Iran, including Tehran, resulting in damage and civilian casualties. Iran subsequently launched retaliatory attacks on Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East.
Amid escalating conflict in the Middle East, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz—the primary route for transporting oil and liquefied natural gas from the Persian Gulf to global markets—has come to a near standstill. Insurance companies have begun raising premiums and reviewing coverage amid mounting security threats to maritime traffic.
