US considers a new attack on Iran amid diplomatic efforts
Hamilton, Canada (ANTARA) – The Trump administration is considering launching another military operation against Iran amid ongoing diplomacy to reach a new agreement, according to a report on Friday. CBS News reported that although no final decision has yet been made, preparations for possible action continue by the government and the US military. The report said Trump even cancelled plans to spend Memorial Day weekend at his golf club in New Jersey and returned to the White House because of what he described as matters of government. In addition, several US military and intelligence personnel were also reported to have altered or cancelled their holiday plans as officials prepared for a potential new conflict. The report also said defence officials have reviewed the list of personnel withdrawals at overseas bases, while troop rotations continued in the Middle East amid concerns about possible retaliation from Iran. The US and Iran have tended to avoid direct attacks since a ceasefire was put in place in April, so indirect negotiations on a broader agreement could continue. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly told CBS News that Trump remains steadfast that Iran should not have a nuclear weapon and warned that Washington is prepared to face all scenarios that may arise if talks fail. Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned earlier this week that any future attack by the US or Israel could widen the conflict beyond the region. Nevertheless, according to the report Tehran is expected to respond soon to the US proposal recently conveyed via Pakistan, which acts as an intermediary. Source: Anadolu
