Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Several companies of western US were set to explore cooperation and investment in Indonesia.

Indonesia`s improved economic condition appeared to become a strong attraction to foreign investment to operate in the country.

"Actually the two countries already have cooperation in several sectors including the retail and food sectors," Industry Ministry secretary general Agus Tjahayana said in Jakarta Thursday.

Head of the Indonesian Trade Promotion Center in Chicago at the Trade Ministry Hotmida Purba said the US is very interested in trade cooperation with Indonesia.

In the January-June 2010 period Indonesia`s exports to the US reached 2.3 billion US dollars, an increase of 35 percent compared to the the 1.7 billion dollars in last year`s same period. In the meantime, US imports from Indonesia in the same period also increased by 23.5 percent from last year`s.

Some of the Indonesian export commodities to the US with a value of more than 20 million US dollars included garments, footwear, cacao, and some other products. The export of foot-ward until June 2010 reached 31.61 million dollars, up by 12 percent compared to the 28.25 million dollars in the same period last year.

General chairman of the Association of Indonesian Footwear Poruducers (Asprisindo) Eddy Widjanarko said the footwear exports to the US had been quite good, and up to the first semester of 2010, the footwear exports had increased by 29 percent.

According to the Investment Agency (BKPM) US investment in Indonesia in the first quarter of this year reached 436.9 million dollars. Last year, US investment in Indonesia reached 171.5 million dollars, up compared to the 151.3 million dollars in 2008. (*)
