Ukraine recently announced it would open access to its national data, which can be utilised by allies in the future. The data is being made available so that allied countries can train AI software when operating advanced drone weapons. A platform has been prepared to train AI models without having to provide sensitive data. The platform will contain a continuously updated dataset, including photos and video recordings. Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov confirmed that the data held is unmatched. Some of this includes data collected during previous combat flights. “Ukraine possesses a unique set of battlefield data that is unparalleled anywhere else in the world. This includes millions of annotated images collected across tens of thousands of combat flights,” Fedorov said. The opening of access follows requests from allies and a number of foreign companies. They sought access to Ukraine’s dataset to train models in recognising patterns, shapes, and the behaviour of humans and machines on the battlefield. Ukraine will still benefit. Fedorov explained that his country could experience an acceleration in the development of AI models already being used in the war against Russia. He also confirmed Ukraine is ready to cooperate on developing AI technology with a number of partners, including to create the latest autonomous technology solutions. “We are ready to cooperate with partners to conduct joint analysis, model training, and create new technological solutions,” Fedorov said.
