The Central Government and Jakarta Provincial Government are jointly undertaking urban renewal in the densely populated residential area of Menteng Tenggulun, Central Jakarta. The renewal programme includes the implementation of roof-renewal initiatives and the opening of a culinary district.

A total of 52 homes in Menteng Tenggulun will be renovated by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Settlement. Of this number, 23 homes serve as both residences and business locations for residents.

In supporting this initiative, the Jakarta Department of Industry, Trade, Cooperatives and SMEs (PPKUKM) is promoting urban renewal through UMKM-based economic strengthening of the community.

“We see significant potential in Menteng Tenggulun to be developed as a community-based culinary tourism district. The PPKUKM Department will ensure we drive and provide maximum support for SMEs here to grow and upgrade,” stated Elisabeth Ratu Rante Allo, Head of Jakarta’s PPKUKM Department, on Wednesday, 25 February 2026.

Beyond the 23 homes serving as business premises, a further 10 SMEs in the area will continue to receive support even if their residential conditions are already adequate. This approach aligns with efforts to promote area renewal based on community empowerment and strengthening of grassroots economics.

“Governor Pramono Anung has consistently emphasised that Jakarta’s urban renewal must address two matters simultaneously: improving environmental quality and enhancing resident welfare,” she said.

Elisabeth assured that her department will conduct mapping and assessment of resident business potential to support the culinary tourism concept being prepared. According to her, nearly every corner of Menteng Tenggulun has food and beverage home business operators with potential to become a new economic attraction.

“We will facilitate business legalisation, product quality improvement, packaging and branding, marketing assistance, and access to financing. We have also engaged banks and financing institutions so that SME operators are not trapped by informal lenders, whilst simultaneously improving their financial literacy,” she explained.

She hopes that through cross-sector collaboration, Menteng Tenggulun can transform from a dense residential area into an orderly, clean and productive district known as a community-based culinary tourism destination.

“This is not merely about repairing house roofs and walls, but about building hope and economic futures for residents. When central and local government work together, the impact will be far stronger and directly benefit communities,” she concluded.
