Unsafe pedestrian overpass

Unsafe pedestrian overpass

From Pelita

A couple of days ago an acquaintance of mine told me of how, while waiting at the Baturaja bus shelter in front of the Kartika Plaza Hotel in Central Jakarta, he witnessed a gang of people crowding a foreigner. Moments later the man discovered that his wallet was gone. Although he pointed his finger at the ruffians it was too late to do anything.

A number of acquaintances have told me that the Baturaja and the nearby Dukuh Atas bus shelters are indeed very unsafe and this includes the pedestrian overpass in the vicinity. Hold-ups, pick-pocketing and robberies frequently occur in that area.

My advice to everyone, who have to be at those shelters or use the overpass, is to be especially watchful since the hoodlums there usually operate in groups of three of four men. Their usual method is for some of them to crowd the victim while one of them tries to snatch the person's purse of wallet.
