United States Embassy in Iraq Targeted by Drone Attack
The United States Embassy, situated in Baghdad’s heavily guarded Green Zone in Iraq’s capital, has become a target of drone attacks. There have been no reports yet of casualties or the extent of damage caused by the drone strike.
Iraq, long serving as a proxy battlefield between the United States and Iran, has been quickly drawn into the broader Middle Eastern conflict that began with a combined large-scale attack by the US and Israel against Tehran on 28 February.
According to local Iraqi media reports, as cited by Press TV on Tuesday 17 March, the diplomatic mission in central Baghdad was struck by numerous kamikaze drone attacks on Tuesday morning local time. Plumes of smoke and flames were observed rising from the location.
Several local sources stated that air defence missile systems positioned near the diplomatic compound attempted to intercept and shoot down approaching drones, but were unsuccessful. A number of US fighter aircraft were reported to have taken off over the embassy complex following the drone attack.
Reports indicate that fighters from the Islamic Resistance in Iraq have launched coordinated simultaneous operations against all US military bases in the country. Shortly before the embassy attack, several explosions were reported at Victory Air Base, operated by the US near Baghdad International Airport, though the extent of casualties and damage remains unclear.
On 12 March, the Iraqi Resistance group announced that it had carried out dozens of attacks targeting US bases across various regions of Iraq and surrounding areas within 24 hours. According to statements released by the counter-terrorism group, the operation involved multiple drones as part of retaliation for continued American military aggression in the region. The operation was also described as a response to ongoing Washington attacks against the Axis of Resistance.
