United Airlines has raised checked baggage fees by $10, in response to pressures facing the aviation industry from soaring jet fuel or avtur prices. Avtur is one of the largest expense components for airlines, after labour costs. With this adjustment, the fee for baggage on most United Airlines domestic routes is now $45 if paid in advance, and $50 if paid within 24 hours of the flight. “United is raising the first and second bag fees by $10 for customers travelling in the US, Mexico, Canada, and Latin America, effective for tickets purchased starting Friday, 3 April,” the airline stated, as quoted by CNBC on Monday (6/4/2026). According to Argus data released by the Airlines for America industry group, fuel prices in cities such as Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and New York averaged $4.88 per gallon on Thursday, nearly double compared to before the US and Israeli strikes on Iran. Previously, JetBlue Airways also raised baggage fees by at least $4 per bag on Monday, up to $9 depending on the travel booking time. Such fee increases are typically followed by other airlines. However, there are several exceptions. “United Chase credit card holders, MileagePlus Premier members, active military personnel, and customers travelling in premium cabins can still bring baggage for free,” United said. “Additionally, customers on most routes still receive a $5 discount if they pay for baggage online 24 hours before the flight,” United explained. The rise in fuel prices is also affecting other sectors. For example, Amazon has added a 3.5 percent additional fee related to fuel and logistics for third-party sellers using its fulfilment services.
