A team from Hasanuddin University’s (Unhas) Student Creativity Programme for Entrepreneurship (PKM-K) has developed PLASTERA (Plastic Decomposer Era), a bioplastic wrapper designed as a solution for difficult-to-decompose nappy waste. Team leader Andi Aliyah Tenri Awaru explained that the innovation was born from a real societal need. “Scientifically, we are utilising the characteristics of several biomaterials. Starch extracted from cassava peel serves as the main ingredient for forming bioplastic, which is more easily degradable than petroleum-based plastic,” she said. The innovation uses organic waste in the form of cassava peel and eggshells, and is enriched with eco-enzymes to support the biodegradation process. Beyond its environmental aspect, PLASTERA is also designed to meet practical user needs. The wrapper bag is equipped with an adhesive so that nappy waste can be sealed more tightly, helping to reduce unpleasant odours, and has a compact design making it easy to carry when travelling. Nonetheless, the researchers emphasise that material innovation is only one part of the solution. To expand its utilisation, the Unhas PKM-K team plans to introduce PLASTERA through social media, marketplaces, bazaars, and various student entrepreneurship exhibitions. Public education on the importance of nappy waste management will also be part of the product’s development. The development of PLASTERA demonstrates that there are many ways for students to showcase their critical ideas. With concern and sensitivity towards future threats, students can make a real contribution. Indonesia produces approximately 7.8–9.2 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, most of which is not yet managed properly. This has the potential to pollute the environment, particularly rivers and the sea. Amid the increasing volume of disposable nappy waste, biomaterial innovations like this serve as a reminder that solving the waste problem requires a combination of technology, education, and changes in public behaviour.
