Unfair treatment by Bellevue Court

Unfair treatment by Bellevue Court

I am writing this letter to complain about the treatment I
have received from the management of Bellevue Court Townhouses in
Kemang, South Jakarta. I moved to Bellevue Court in March 1994.
The usual rent is US$2,200 per month for a two year lease. I was
only able to sign a one year lease, and therefore the price was
understandably increased to $2,500 per month. On Feb. 1 I was
offered to extend the lease for another year at $2,650 per month.

First I said that this was not possible since my yearly
allowance is not to exceed $30,000. I asked if I could make the
lease for $2,500 per month, and was told by my landlord that he
would do what he could. When he contacted me again, he said
$2,500 was not possible. I told him I would check with my company
and see if $2,650 would be OK. When I told my him that it was OK
(Feb. 9) he told me that I had to move out because he wanted to
renovate the house so he could increase the price to $2,800 plus
extras, which will be a total of over $3,000 per month. So his
first offer of $2,650 was no longer valid.

The reason for the sudden increase is that in April last year,
six of the 18 townhouses were destroyed by fire due to the
negligence of the management. All the brave tenants were trying
to put out the fire, but this was impossible due to no
fire fighting equipment being available. So to cover the cost of
rebuilding these townhouses, they increased the rent by this
ridiculous amount. The place has been a construction zone since
May, 1994, but not once have I complained about it. The reason
for selecting Bellevue Court in the first place was because of
the quiet and private atmosphere.

They gave me a 19-day notice to find a new place to live. This
is not the way to treat loyal tenants, even more so with all the
competition they now face from all the new apartments and
townhouses available in Jakarta.
