Unexpectedly, IKN Matches Advanced Countries Because It Has This
The construction of Ibu Kota Nusantara continues to show significant progress, particularly in underground infrastructure that serves as the backbone for the city’s future utilities. One project currently in the spotlight is the Multi Utility Tunnel (MUT) network, designed to support modern utility needs in an integrated manner.
“Multi Utility Tunnel (MUT) tunnel, the total length of MUT already constructed is 72.6 km,” said Acting Deputy for Facilities and Infrastructure of the IKN Authority, Danis H Sumadilaga, to CNBC Indonesia via a short message on Sunday (12/4/2026).
The existence of this tunnel becomes a crucial element in the smart city concept promoted by Ibu Kota Nusantara. With an underground system, various utility networks can be managed more neatly without disrupting the city’s aesthetics.
Danis explained that the MUT is not just an ordinary tunnel but is designed to support efficient service distribution.
“The MUT network is located under the road sidewalks to serve the utility needs of buildings and areas along those roads,” said Danis.
The construction of this network is also focused on the government core area, which will become the centre of national activities in the future. The project is part of the priorities for the initial development phase.
He added that the completion target is being pursued according to the schedule set by the government.
“The MUT in the government core centre area, built through the state budget, is targeted to be completed in 2028,” said Danis.
In addition to underground infrastructure, the construction of the government area is also progressing in stages. Several important complexes, from legislative to judicial, are currently being worked on.
Danis outlined that the progress is still in the early stages, in line with the large and complex scale of the project.
“The infrastructure currently under construction includes: buildings and office areas for legislative and judicial institutions and their supporting infrastructure, with an average progress of 3.6%,” said Danis.
With the combination of above- and below-ground construction, IKN is directed to become a city that is not only modern in appearance but also efficient in its infrastructure system. The government aims for all these elements to be integrated before the core area fully operates.
