Underpass on Gatot Subroto Road in Cimahi as a Solution to Prevent Incidents Like in Bekasi
CIMAHI – The Cimahi City Government is pushing for the acceleration of the underpass construction on Jalan Gatot Subroto (Gatsu)-Baros. The underground road project will eliminate the level crossing with the railway on that road, which triggers congestion and has the potential to cause hazards.
As occurred in Bekasi City, West Java, where an electric taxi allegedly broke through the railway crossing on Jalan Amprea and stalled, subsequently being hit by an electric rail train (KRL) on Monday night (27/4/2026). That incident is said to be the initial sequence before the collision between the Argo Bromo train and the KRL at Bekasi Timur Station.
“The point is that the underpass solution is one of the best alternatives to eliminate the level crossing in Cimahi City,” said Deputy Mayor of Cimahi Adhitia Yudisthira when confirmed on Wednesday (29/4/2026).
According to Adhitia, the construction of the underpass on Jalan Gatot Subroto has been mandated in Ministry of Transportation Regulation (Permenhub) Number 94 of 2018 on Improving Safety at Level Crossings Between Railway Tracks and Roads.
The aim is to minimise accident risks by requiring the construction of non-level crossings such as flyovers or underpasses. Therefore, he said, the underpass construction is very much needed on Jalan Gatot Subroto to address congestion and minimise accidents.
This is because the traffic volume in that area is increasingly dense along with the rising number of train trips, especially the Feeder Train whose travel intensity is quite heavy.
“Because with the elimination of the level crossing on Jalan Gatsu, it can reduce the risk of accidents due to collisions, reduce congestion and long traffic queues,” Adhitia added.
The Cimahi City Government has allocated a budget of Rp 36 billion to free up land in support of the underpass construction on Jalan Gatot Subroto. Meanwhile, the construction will be carried out by the West Java Provincial Government.
Head of the Public Works and Spatial Planning Department of Cimahi City, Wilman Sugiansyah, said that the total area of land to be freed up to support the underpass construction by the Provincial Government is 3,400 square metres.
“In total, there are about 3,400 square metres that we are freeing up. The construction is by the province because it is a provincial road access,” Wilman said. For the demolition of the buildings, he said, it will later be carried out by the contractor.
However, some buildings have already been demolished independently by their owners. “Some have been demolished independently by their owners near the tracks. The rest will be by the contractor implementer,” he said.
