New York (ANTARA) - The United Nations Security Council is likely to hold a vote on a resolution concerning the Strait of Hormuz as early as Friday (3 April), stated Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani on Thursday.

“The proposed resolution will authorise member states to use ‘all necessary and proportionate defensive measures, in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters, including in the territorial waters of coastal states within or bordering the Strait of Hormuz,’” said Al Zayani.

According to him, the effort aims to secure the transit route and prevent attempts to close, obstruct, or disrupt international navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, the resolution demands that Iran immediately cease all attacks on commercial and merchant ships in the strait.

“We hope for a unified position from this esteemed Council during the vote on the draft resolution tomorrow,” said Al Zayani during the UN Security Council meeting.

The draft document is fully in accordance with international law, Al Zayani added.

However, according to the Security Council’s work schedule, no meeting is planned for Friday.

On 28 February, the United States and Israel launched attacks on targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran responded by striking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East, in self-defence.

The heightened tensions around Iran have led to a de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the main route for shipping oil and liquefied natural gas from Persian Gulf countries to global markets, which has driven up energy prices.
