UN General Assembly adopts resolution on the establishment, implementation, and review of mandates
The United Nations (ANTARA) - The UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday adopted a resolution on the establishment, implementation, and review of mandates, as part of efforts to reform the global body to make it more efficient and effective.
The resolution was adopted through a recorded vote with 168 votes in favour, 4 against, and no abstentions. Belarus, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Nicaragua, and Russia voted against the resolution.
Under the provisions of the resolution, the UNGA approves a set of principles to guide the creation, implementation, and review of all UN mandates.
“The resolution adopted today reflects a shared understanding of the full lifecycle of mandates and a commitment to strengthening each of its stages, which brings greater discipline, coherence, and transparency to mandate-making,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Guterres said the process encourages “clearer and more focused mandates” and strengthens a culture of continuous improvement based on evidence, accountability, and results.
“This is a big step. But it is only the beginning,” he said.
