UN concerned Lebanon heating up amid Iran-US-Israel conflict
The United Nations, New York (ANTARA) – UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated on Monday 2 March that the UN is concerned about military activities in Lebanon amid the ongoing conflict between Iran and the US-Israel alliance.
This follows Hizbullah’s declaration of full solidarity with Iran and its people after the US and Israel launched strikes against Iranian targets. Hizbullah subsequently launched several attacks on Israeli territory, prompting Israel to strike various military locations belonging to the group in Lebanon.
“In Lebanon, where we have political presence and peacekeeping forces, tensions have also escalated. We are deeply concerned about the firefights along the Blue Line. The situation on the ground is evolving rapidly, and we are closely monitoring developments,” Dujarric told reporters.
Dujarric added that the UN is aware of gunfire directed at Israel claimed by Hizbullah and Israeli strikes launched against several areas in Lebanon.
“Our UNIFIL peacekeeping forces remain in position despite the challenging circumstances,” Dujarric emphasised.
Earlier on Saturday 28 February, the United States and Israel launched strikes against multiple targets in Iran, including Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. The strikes resulted in the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and several senior Iranian government and military officials.
Iran responded with strikes against Israeli territory and US military bases throughout the Middle East.
