Indonesia is considered in need of taking new steps to play a role in easing the conflict in the Middle East, particularly the tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran. This was stated by Hikmahanto Juwana, Professor of International Law at the University of Indonesia. He proposes that Indonesia lead the formation of a coalition of guarantor states to ensure the implementation of a ceasefire. Hikmahanto assesses that although several countries such as Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, and Oman have been more active in mediation efforts beforehand, Indonesia has not yet gained full trust from the conflicting parties. “If Indonesia wishes to play a role in the conflict between Israel and the US against Iran, the role that can be taken is the initiative to build a coalition of guarantor countries,” said Hikmahanto in his latest analysis, quoted on Thursday (26/3/2026). According to him, the existence of this guarantor coalition is crucial given the high level of distrust Iran has towards the US and Israel. This distrust arose after attacks that occurred in the midst of negotiations previously facilitated by Oman. “Iran feels betrayed by the US when Israel and the US suddenly attacked Iran in the midst of negotiations that were nearly reached,” he explained. Hikmahanto emphasised that the coalition is needed to ensure there are no violations of the ceasefire or future peace agreements. He also mentioned that Indonesia has the opportunity to lead this initiative, particularly with President Prabowo Subianto’s closeness to several world leaders. “The President can make contact with several heads of government, especially countries that are highly dependent on the Strait of Hormuz,” he said. The countries in question include France, the United Kingdom, Japan, China, Russia, South Korea, Germany, and Gulf states. This coalition is hoped to be able to pressure the US and Israel to stop attacks during the mediation process. In addition, the guarantor coalition can also provide security guarantees to Iran, including ensuring no further attacks if Iran reopens the Strait of Hormuz as a vital route for global energy trade.
