UI Frankly Explains Thorough Investigation into Sexual Harassment by Dozens of Faculty of Law Students
Universitas Indonesia (UI) has affirmed a victim-protection-based approach in handling the case of alleged verbal sexual violence within the Faculty of Law environment. The handling is conducted comprehensively, involving the Task Force for Prevention and Handling of Violence (Satgas PPK), the faculty, and related units at the university level. UI’s Director of Public Relations, Media, Government, and International Affairs, Erwin Agustian Panigoro, emphasised the commitment to prioritising the victim in managing this case, providing comprehensive support. This approach is part of UI’s commitment to creating a safe, fair, and responsive campus environment to all forms of sexual violence. “UI reiterates that the approach used in handling this case is victim-oriented, ensuring the availability of psychological support, legal assistance, and ongoing academic support,” he said, quoted on Wednesday, 15 April 2026. To date, 16 students are known to be allegedly involved in the case. According to him, the examination process for the students upholds the principle of presumption of innocence as well as the protection of the rights of all parties involved. “Based on preliminary findings, this dynamic stemmed from interactions in a digital communication space that then spread widely and triggered public response,” he said. UI ensures the handling process is conducted carefully and evidence-based. In addition to the initial report, the campus also facilitates additional reports through student representatives to strengthen the verification process. Currently, the handling stages include examining the parties, deepening the chronology, verifying evidence, and compiling recommendations by Satgas PPK. The recommendation results will later serve as the basis for university leadership in determining sanctions, including the possibility of academic sanctions. Amid this process, UI also ensures the campus environment remains conducive despite emerging social dynamics among students. “The development of the situation in the campus environment is also a concern for the university, including social dynamics that have emerged as a response to the case. UI ensures that this condition has been managed so it does not develop into physical conflict,” he added. For information, based on the disclosed details, the alleged harassment was carried out by 16 students through a conversation group. In several screenshots that circulated, the conversation allegedly contained sexually tinged comments that were degrading, targeting not only female students but also female lecturers.
