Semarang – Dian Nuswantoro University (Udinus) in Semarang has developed a religiously themed technological innovation, Animasi Murottal (A-Mur), as a medium for learning to read the Qur’an.

The launch of A-Mur took place at the opening of the fourth Rohis Ramadhan pesantren in Indonesia at the Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah (MAJT), Semarang, on Thursday.

Rector of Udinus, Prof Dr Pulung Nurtantio Andono, explained that A-Mur is a collaboration of science, dawa (proselytisation) and technology using the Live Shot to Animation method.

“Alhamdulillah, today Udinus is launching Animasi Murottal in collaboration with the Regional Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kanwil Kemenag) of Central Java to train students’ potential so that it is not merely theory, but is directly applied,” he said.

The innovation was produced by researchers at the Centre for Computer Science in Arts and Culture (CSAC), Udinus Faculty of Computer Science (FIK) students, and the Matholi’ul Anwar Islamic Practice Body at Udinus.

They regularly hold animation production workshops with partners, including students as contributors, organisations, and schools to be invited to collaborate.

Meanwhile, the Head of the A-Mur Development Team and also the Head of the Informatics Engineering Study Program at Udinus, Dr Edy Mulyanto, explained that A-Mur employs 3D technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

He said that 3D and AI were chosen because today’s generation is more attracted to the visual aspects of animation than conventional learning.

Moreover, he said, generative AI enables the animation production process to be easy and fast with good visual quality.

“The aim is for teachers to create engaging learning media, so as to foster a love for the Qur’an from an early age among Generation Z and Generation Alpha,” said the PAM head.

Head of the Islamic Religious Education Sub-Directorate (PAI) for senior high schools/ madrasah aliyah/ vocational schools at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Lelis Tsuroya Herniatin, positively welcomed Udinus’s A-Mur.

She said the innovation is a very good medium for popularising the recitation of the Qur’an in a more engaging way.

“We hope this launch provides a new impetus, especially for Rohis members across provinces who will become role models and drivers of digital literacy in their regions,” she said.

Currently, A-Mur content can be enjoyed on social media platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram @amurudinus, and is broadcast daily before the Maghrib azan on TVKU.

In addition to the inauguration of A-Mur, Udinus also signed a cooperation agreement with the Central Java Province Ministry of Religious Affairs regarding the development of Da’wah media and Qur’an learning based on digital media.

Attending were the Secretary General of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Kamaruddin Amin, the Udinus Senate Chair Prof Dr Edi Noersasongko, and the university’s Deputy Rector II, Prof Dr Guruh Fajar Shidik.
