Typhoon hits Manokwari

MANOKWARI, Irian Jaya: One person went missing and five fishing platforms were destroyed when a typhoon hit Doreri Bay over the weekend, a press report said yesterday.

The northwest-bound typhoon swept through Manokwari at a speed of 60 kilometers an hour on Saturday, triggering tidal waves, Antara reported.

Police identified the missing fisherman as Made, 18, from the South Sulawesi capital of Ujungpandang.

Manokwari police precinct chief Lt. Col. Tjahjo Hernoadi said that the police were still collecting information on the extent of damage caused by the natural disaster.

Eyewitnesses said that six fishermen survived the disaster by jumping out of their boats which were anchored near the pier. (pan)
