Two Truck Drivers Killed in Waste Pile Landslide at Bantargebang Landfill Were DKI Employees
Jakarta, 9 March 2026 — Governor Pramono Anung of DKI Jakarta acknowledged that two truck drivers who died in a landslide of a waste heap at the Bantargebang Waste Treatment Site (TPST) in Bekasi were Petugas Penanganan Prasarana dan Sarana Umum (PJLP — General Infrastructure and Facilities Staff) employed by the Jakarta Department of Environment.
Pramono expressed condolences over the incident, which claimed four lives in total. According to him, two victims were garbage truck drivers, whilst the other two were residents in the vicinity of the location.
“The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will ensure that deceased victims from the Department of Environment’s PJLP staff receive workers’ compensation insurance (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) benefits. Meanwhile, all medical treatment costs for the injured will be fully covered by the DKI Jakarta Government,” Pramono stated at Jakarta City Hall on Monday.
The provincial government also confirmed that all treatment costs for those injured in the incident would be covered.
On another front, Pramono explained that the waste heap landslide at Bantargebang was believed to have been triggered by heavy rainfall occurring over an extended period. The high rainfall caused water to seep into the waste pile, making it slippery and causing it to shift. According to him, these conditions caused the waste pile to move or slide until it eventually collapsed.
“The waste mountain landslide in zone 4A of Bantargebang TPST occurred last Sunday at precisely 14:30 hours as a result of heavy rain and a prolonged duration,” he said.
In addition to the four fatalities, five other individuals sustained injuries. As a result of the landslide, the operational road and Ciketing River flow were temporarily blocked by waste material. The government, together with a joint task force, is continuing efforts to manage the situation and restore normalcy in the affected area.
