Two school students arrested for killing

JAKARTA (JP): Police arrested two of four students from a
privately run technical high school yesterday for the beating and
stabbing to death of a student from another private technical
senior high school on Friday.

Chief of the West Jakarta Police Detectives Capt. Ronie F.
Sompie said one of the suspects, identified as Edi Suprapto, 20,
was turned in by his parents to the Tambora police subprecinct
Sunday night.

"We appreciated what was done by Edi's parents," Ronie said.

Meanwhile, the other suspect, Wahyudi, was picked up from his
home on Jl. Kalianyar in West Jakarta yesterday. The student
admitted only to having beaten the victim, Sularto. He said it
was Edi who stabbed him to death.

Edi previously said that he and his other three friends,
Wahyudi, Engkus and Muharto, beat Sularto on Jl. Latumeten in
Grogol, West Jakarta.

He finally admitted to stabbing the victim with a knife after
the police showed him the knife believed to have been used in the
killing.

Ronie said that the police will soon arrest the remaining two
students, Engkos and Muharto.

"They are in hiding with the help of their parents. But we
have identified their whereabouts," he said.

At least three students died in brawls in West Jakarta,
Central Jakarta and North Jakarta last week, including Sularto.

Bachtiar Effendi, a student from a technical senior high
school, was stabbed to death by one of three students from a
private senior high school on Jl. Kramat Raya in Central Jakarta
on Tuesday evening. The death of Bachtiar prompted a riot on the
following day, when hundreds of his friends ran amok, assaulting
passers-by on the street in front of the Central Jakarta police
precinct.

Also on Friday, Jamot, a student of a technical senior high
school, was killed in a brawl involving students of a senior high
school on Jl. Jembatan Tiga, Penjaringan district in North
Jakarta.

All the alleged killers are still at large.

At least 12 students died in separate brawls in the past six
months in the city. (jun)
