Two Pertamina Tankers Stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, Foreign Ministry: Diplomatic Efforts Underway
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu RI) states that the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Tehran is engaging in diplomacy with Iran regarding two ships owned by PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) that are stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. “Thus, diplomatic efforts are currently underway, in coordination with the relevant parties in Iran,” said Santo Darmosumarto, Director General for Asia, Pacific, and Africa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at a press conference at the MFA, on Friday (6 March 2026).
However, Santo emphasised that the parties being engaged are not just one or two, but involve many parties. “To ensure that Indonesia’s interests related to Pertamina can continue to be protected, in terms of safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.
Earlier reports indicated that PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) continues to monitor intensively all its fleets and the safety of its workers in the Middle East as tensions in the region escalate. Currently there are four PIS ships in the area: the Gamsunoro, which is loading at Khor al Zubair, Iraq; the Pertamina Pride, which has completed loading and is now berthed at Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia; the PIS Rinjani, which is berthed at Khor Fakkan, United Arab Emirates; and the PIS Paragon, which is discharging its cargo in Oman.
Pjs Corporate Secretary PIS Vega Pita said the company is monitoring developments around the clock and is endeavouring for the two vessels to exit the Gulf area as soon as possible. “At present, our fleet team is maintaining intensive communications with the operator to coordinate and ensure the safety of the crew and vessels,” Vega said in a written statement, Monday (2 March 2026).
