Two officers court-martialled
DENPASAR, Bali: Three army officers will be brought to
military court here this week for their roles in the Jan. 12
killing of six people in Liquisa, East Timor, the local military
chief said yesterday.
"I would like to stress that we have no intention to hide
anything in the Liquisa affair," said chief of the Udayana
military command Maj. Gen. Adang Ruchiatna, who oversees security
in Bali, Nusa Tenggara and East Timor.
Adang identified the soldiers to be brought to trial as First
Lt. Jermias Kase and First Private Rusdin Maubere, the official
news agency Antara reported.
The military wants to show the international community that
the Armed Forces will not cover up anything about the incident,
which sparked an outcry in Indonesia and abroad.
At the first hearings, the court will hear from 11 witnesses,
including the Liquisa military chief Lt. Col. Tris Suryawan,
Dadang said.
National and international complaints prompted the Armed
Forces and the National Commission on Human Rights to conduct
separate investigations. (pan)
