Two Lebak Women Who Went Viral for Stepping on the Quran Named as Suspects
Police have secured two perpetrators suspected of committing the criminal act of religious blasphemy by stepping on the Quran, which went viral on social media. Both have been officially named as suspects. “Lebak Police Resort in Banten has conducted a case review for this incident, and the perpetrator who ordered the stepping on the holy book, initialled N, and the perpetrator M who stepped on the holy book, have been designated as suspects this afternoon,” said Head of Public Relations for Banten Regional Police, Commissioner Maruli Hutapea, on Saturday (11/4), quoted from detik. Meanwhile, Lebak Police Resort has asked the public to remain calm and not be provoked by the religious blasphemy case that has disturbed the community. He stated that the police will not tolerate any actions that could potentially disrupt public order, especially those involving sensitive issues like religion. Public Relations Officer of Lebak Police Resort, First Inspector Mustafa Ibnu Syafir, explained that the incident occurred on Wednesday (8/4) in Kampung Polotot Selatan, Sukaraja Village, Malingping Subdistrict, Lebak Regency. The case began with allegations of theft at a salon owned by one of the suspected perpetrators, initialled NR, against MT. Because MT did not confess, NR is suspected of forcing the victim to take an oath by stepping on the Quran, which was then recorded and disseminated until it went viral on social media. As a result of this act, he said, there has been a strong reaction from the public that could potentially cause public order disturbances. “In response to the case, Lebak Police Resort immediately took swift action by securing both suspected perpetrators to prevent escalation of the situation,” he said. Mustafa emphasised that the legal process will proceed professionally and in accordance with applicable laws. “We ensure that the handling of this case is carried out professionally, transparently, and thoroughly,” he said.
