Two Houses Collapse in Tebet Landslide, Road Partly Blocked
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Two houses collapsed and subsided after a landslide in a riverside settlement on Jalan J, RT 06 RW 10, Kebon Baru, Tebet, South Jakarta, on Friday 6 March 2026. Moreover, road access in the locality was partially cut off. Based on Kompas.com’s observations at the scene on Saturday 7 March 2026, the ground had subsided by about 25 metres toward the Ciliwung River. The affected subsidence area covered about 5 square metres. Additionally, a red earth cliff abutting the river collapsed completely. At the base of the cliff adjacent to the water, piles of debris from the destroyed houses—brick wall fragments, tin roofs, wood, bamboo fragments, and PVC pipes—were visible. At the edge of the cliff, some residents’ belongings remained, such as a white washing machine, plant pots, and a cardboard mat tossed onto the road. Officials from the West Jakarta Suku Dinas Sumber Daya Air were seen on site in blue uniforms. They descended the slope with ropes to inspect and clear the debris. They were also seen carrying wooden stakes (dolken) to drive into the ground as a retention barrier to stop further landslides. As a result of the landslide, road access that could previously be used by motorcycles has narrowed drastically, leaving only a pedestrian path. Yanti, 50, a resident whose house sits right next to the landslide point, described the terrifying moments as the ground and the building near her home sank. She said the incident occurred on Friday at about 10:30 WIB. “Yesterday the children were playing, then there was a rumbling sound, and then suddenly the landslide happened and the house collapsed,” Yanti told Kompas.com at the scene on Saturday, 7 March 2026. Yanti explained that the material that slipped away consisted of two houses that were usually rented out. There are six rental units at the location. Fortunately, at the time of the landslide those houses were vacant, so there were no casualties.
