Two Giant Cows Bring Total to 78 Sacrificial Cows at Jogokariyan Mosque in Yogyakarta, Meat Distributed to Residents
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA – The Eid al-Adha sacrifice at Jogokariyan Mosque in Yogyakarta has once again captured public attention. As of the eve of Eid al-Adha 1447 H, the committee has gathered 78 sacrificial cows to be slaughtered and distributed to residents and areas requesting assistance. Two of the largest cows, each weighing 1.15 tonnes, were paraded past the mosque and drew crowds of onlookers. Second Chairman of Jogokariyan Mosque’s Takmir, Ustadz Subhan Rizali Nur, stated that registration for sacrifices opened a month ago to allow the public to entrust their animals for the mosque’s Eid al-Adha ritual. ‘So far, 78 cows have been collected. Most will be slaughtered at the mosque and distributed to residents,’ he said during an interview at the mosque on Tuesday, 26 May 2026. Among the dozens of cows, two Belgian Blue cows attracted public attention due to their massive size. The two cows were donated by a Jakarta businessman, each weighing 1.15 tonnes. Before being placed in the holding area, they were paraded through the streets near the mosque, drawing crowds of onlookers. The two giant cows are being cared for by a local breeder in Bantul. ‘These newly arrived cows were donated by a businessman from Jakarta,’ he added. ‘Each currently weighs 1.15 tonnes,’ he added.
