Two foreigners arrested
JAKARTA (JP): Immigration officials have arrested a Pakistani and a Bangladeshi for illegally entering Indonesia.
Immigration's director of supervision and operations Zaiman Nurmatias said yesterday that the Pakistani man, Muhammad Khan, was deported on April 15 because he had overstayed his visa.
Khan, who held passport No. A 897678, was a journalist of the Karachi-based Daily Anjam, Zaiman said.
Khan was detained and interrogated soon after an immigration official recognized Khan as looking similar to a foreigner who was deported recently.
Zaiman said that Khan was also found using a different passport, No. C 938753, under the name Jameel Ghulam Ali. "Khan was immediately sent to an immigration quarantine center in Kalideres, West Jakarta," Zaiman said.
Meanwhile, the Bangladeshi man, Jhontan Modal alias Bobby, was arrested in Langsa, Aceh, for not entering Indonesia through an immigration inspection site. He had no travel documents with him.
Jhontan said that he entered Indonesia from Malaysia by boat with a female Indonesian friend Zainab.
Zaiman said that the two foreigners violated Article 48 of Regulation No. 9/1992 on immigration, which stipulates that violators face a prison sentence of up to three years or a Rp 15 million fine. (hhr)
