Two members of a joint response team who were injured while fighting a forest and land fire in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) have been taken to Dr Soetomo Regional General Hospital in Surabaya for surgery to treat their burns.

The two are Munawi, from the Masyarakat Peduli Api (MMP TLP) community fire-watch unit, and Suraji, a security guard at a hotel near the fire.

They were transferred from Tongas Regional General Hospital in Probolinggo regency to Dr Soetomo for more intensive medical treatment following the incident.

Adin Niken Primasari, a member of the legal, public relations and marketing unit at Dr Soetomo Hospital, confirmed that both patients were admitted to the emergency department on Thursday evening (15 October).

“The first patient was admitted to the emergency department at 8.45pm. Surgery began in the early hours and is still under way,” Niken said on Friday (16 October).

The second patient arrived at Dr Soetomo less than an hour later and was also scheduled to undergo surgery.

“The second patient was admitted at 9.36pm. Surgery is planned, and the patient is currently under observation in the resuscitation unit,” she said.

Dr Soetomo Hospital has not released further information about the severity of the burns or the current condition of either responder.

At the time of publication, medical teams remained focused on life-saving treatment and surgery in the resuscitation and operating rooms.

Four personnel died in the incident: Sukaris, 55, and Hendra Rony Wagiyanata, both TNBTS staff, and Wisnu Yuda Pratama, 25, and Sefriel Ardiansyah, 19, who were security guards at a hotel near the scene.
