TV dubbing
From Republika
I am concerned with the latest development in the Indonesian
language. We have come a long way since our founding fathers
declared the Youth Pledge more than 60 years ago, the main focus
of which was the Indonesian language.
What is happening to the language now? If I judge it from the
foreign telenovelas broadcasted by TVRI, it seems that Indonesian
has become a sought after commodity.
Language apart, telenovelas don't match Indonesian culture
despite their growing popularity. Nevertheless, they are being
advertised in a telenovela tabloid featuring drawn-out stories
with sexual tinges, TV stations are inviting telenovela stars,
their is an association of telenovela dubbers, and, the latest in
the chain, telenovela lawyers.
In the past, talking about sex in the living room was
considered taboo, let alone talking about sexual intercourse with
someone other than your spouse, as often shown on telenovela
programs.
Our pride in our language has disappeared because of its
shabby use in telenovelas.
